Wednesday's Household - Program Night

School program was last night - so today's pics are about that.

For grandpas and grandmas that live far away and aunts and uncles who are not near.

This is the whole school.  We make up half of it.

They sang a song and recited some verses at the beginning.

Then Jules shared her poem about the gifts of senses that God has given to us.

Tank shared the poem about "Wynken, Blynken and Nod".

And a piano piece called "The Banjo Picker".

Daddy caught someone peeking over the back of their bench.

The older girls shared their poems next and Bugaboo had two long ones - "The Sandpiper and I" and "The Children's Hour".

Then she played her recital piece "Camptown Races".

Waterman shared his song "Covered Wagon Days".

Jones shared a poem called "Crossing the Bar",

and Sharpie recited a portion from "The Present Crisis".

Then they revealed the surprise.  They had made a cute craft out of crayons for all the moms.

It's on a canvas, and we need to find a place to hang it.  It's beautiful!

Then came the snacks, which was really a lunch, and fellowship.

Our favorite lady stood in for all the grandparents and aunts and uncles who couldn't be there.  We're so glad she was able to come.

Thursday's Thoughts (oops, it's still Wednesday) - Growing up Gentlemen

This is taken from a blog that has 24 ways to prepare your young man to be a gentleman

As I was looking over the list, I saw this one and looked outside and saw it in action.

My boys are a huge help to me with the little ones around here.  And the little ones love them.  They love being taken to look at the cows or chickens or ducks.

Next year will be a lot different on school days.  They won't be here to help take babies outside to play.  This school year is almost over.  Today we only have a little over a week left, but a storm's brewin' so we thought we'd spend part of the morning outside.  They had a lot of fun.

Our boys need help learning to be leaders.  The world around says just play vidoe games and do what you want while you can.  But our Lord showed a different side of a man.  My goal (and my husband's) is to teach my boys to be like Him.

Wednesday's Household - more organizing

I just need to tell you that my house is NOT organized.  But I love going into places that are.  I guess this keeps me pursuing some organization in my own house.  I'm taking teeny steps toward this.  Since this is the month for organizing in my Titus 2 Tea posts, I'm pursuing it harder than ever.

The Bible says "pursue excellence".  While I don't (definitely) have it all together, this is the area I'm working on.   And I kind of think, I'll always be working on it.  I'll never have it all together.

So yesterday was the videos that have been bugging me in our bedroom.  Just want to get all things office out of there, but we don't have a room designated as an office so....for now, I'll just be happy with little steps.

The videos are always a mess, never stacked neatly and someone who is looking for a video always seems to tear apart the bookshelf.  Now, my new solution isn't all that great either.  There are some major problems with it, but it is a better solution so we'll go with it for now.

First, I had the boys bring down all the videos (and when I say videos, I mean VHS cassettes - DVD's are store elsewhere).  Then I sorted according to little kid, older kid and family.   There are a couple of videos in the family movies that I wouldn't want the little kids to watch without me, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't pick them anyway.

Then I started filling a crate with the little kids' movies - Winnie the Pooh and mostly all cartoons.
I labeled it with a ring clip.
And then put them up on this shelf, way above the dryer.  As I said before there are a few problems with this, so I will have to think about it more.  One is that when you go to take the crate down, if you aren't on a chair, you end up with a movie or two bouncing off the head.  The other is that the older boys and I are the only ones who can get to the movies.

There are a couple of good things about this solution.  The opposite of the negative - less hands messing with the movies means less mess, and that is especially when the little hands can't get to them. The other thing is that it's out of my room.

One very quick fix to this is to simply make four categories and add another crate, if the movies weren't stacked so high in the crate they wouldn't fall out when I'm pulling them down.

What cool things are you working on this spring?  Something about spring makes me want to get lots done and do spring cleaning etc.  But just wait till summer, then I'll be wanting to be inside on the couch again.

Wednesday's Household - Spring and clothes

A couple of weeks ago, this was how my dining room looked.  While the babies were napping, I was sorting out of totes into other totes.  Carpenter had said that we would take each of the kids clothes' shopping and I was going to be prepared and not buy a bunch of things I didn't need.

Does it sound like that happens on a regular occurence?  Yep, for me it does.  So  I sorted and sifted through the totes.  Then I made new totes.  There are two totes for each kid with one exception - my second and third sons are very similar in size, so they share, because there is only enough to fit in one tote anyway.

Spring is coming so another good reason to get out the totes was to find those shorts that I had hidden last winter.  Seems they always show up wearing the opposite of what they need.

As we sorted, they brought their clothes from their drawers down and I tossed stained and ripped clothing.  Made piles of outgrown clothes.  One tote per person was my limit.  Not going to save more than that.

As I sorted, I simply threw the clothes in the correct bin.  That helped me attain more bins for sorting into.  Finally my piles were all in totes.

Then, I emptied one tote and wrote down in notebook, the amounts of each thing - shorts, pants, dress pants, shirts, long-sleeved shirts and dress shirts.

As I said before each child has two totes - one if for now (the littler ones also have their memory things in this tote) and the other is for the next size up.  It's for what's between them and their older sibling.  Bugaboo (dd - almost 10) has clothes from a friend who passes things down to her sometimes.  So we try to make sure that the growing-into tote doesn't get to be two or three totes.

The tote that they are growing into goes into the attic - so glad that we have one now.  And the one that they are using between seasons with their memory stuff in it, goes on the top shelf of their closet.  This way I can put something in it or grab another pair of shoes out of it, if they grow out of the ones they are wearing.

This is the first time I've been faithful to write everything down on paper.  Now, I seriously have to find that notebook and get it on the computer.  I was planning to have a piece of paper in each tote so I would know what was in it.  I didn't do that, but still can as all the totes are labeled.  Once I find the notebook, get it on the computer, then I can put those pages in the tote.

I love organizing, but as you can see I'm horrible at it.  It's worth it though, to me, to try.  In this house, things go into disarray fast, but I'm like a turtle, slowly but surely things are changing for the better around here.  Lies tell me it's not worth it - they'll just mess it all up.  But I've found that if I consistently stick with a plan, they tend to follow.

Hope this helps to see another menu.  They aren't in play at our house now.  We had to make some changes.  We now just have leftovers for the lunch meal, except weekends - sometimes we need an extra meal over the weekend.

Wednesday's Household - Menus - Week One

I was asked by a reader for a menu plan with recipes etc.  as a reference for making her own meal plan.  Great idea and it inspired me to check into my menu to make sure that the pricing still looks the same as what I have been thinking it is.

This list is from years ago.   Probably about five or six years.  There is no way that prices are the same or that we eat the same amount of food.  2 packages of Mac-N-Cheese would never last us. Now we need at least four, but five is probably better.

I will share some of these meals on Cooking Tuesday, with the recipes and all.  If you have a meal you want the recipe for sooner, let me know and I'll put it at the top of the list.

Week 1 - $44.55+ 14.10 = $58.65 (The first number is the total of the meals for week one and the second number is the cost of breakfast.)

Sunday - $6.30 (This is the total for lunch and supper.)  My current goal for this number is $7.
Lunch – BBQ Pork - $6.30
Roast - $5.00
4 lbs. Potatoes - $.50 (20lbs/5= $.25/lb.)
1 lb. Carrots - $.80
This meal belongs in two crockpots.  Meat in one and veggies in another.  Each crockpot needs water in it, probably about a cup or 2 in with the meat and the veggies need to be covered.  The crockpots need to be on high and will be done when you get home from church.

Since you need some pork for two other meals this week, cut two portions off the roast before putting the barbeque sauce over it.  Freeze them as you won't need them till the end of the week.

Barbeque sauce
1 cup of ketchup
2 Tablespoons of mustard
2 Tablespoons of syrup or brown sugar
1 Tablespoon of soy sauce
Mix together and pour over the meat after you get home.  These measurements are approximate as I don't measure.  I just pour and taste.  So adjust it according to your preference.  Usually we look in our spice cupboard for some tasty spices to go in it, but definitely salt and pepper.

Supper – Leftovers

Monday - $5.50

Lunch – Sandwiches - $1.50

2 loaves of bread - $.50
½ pkg of Singles - $.1.00
Supper – Meatballs and Rice $4.00

4 cups Rice - $1.10
Vegetables - $.90

Tuesday - $10.75

2 lb. Velveeta – 3.00
3 Brocolli Medley - $3.75
6 lb. Potatoes - $1.50
2 bread - $.50
Dessert - $ 2.00
Supper - Leftovers

Wednesday - $3.50

Lunch – Sandwiches - $1.50

2 loaves of bread - $.50
½ pkg of Singles - $1.00
Supper –Pork rice meal - $2.00

Leftover pork
Rice - $1.10
Veggies - $.90
Thursday - $1.60

Lunch – Sandwiches with Ramen $.50

2 Ramen - $.25
Bread - $.25
Supper – Chicken Noodle soup – $1.10

Chicken – leftover
1 lb Potatoes - $.20
Veggies - $.90
Friday - $ 16.20

Lunch – Mac-N-Cheese - $ .70

2 Mac-N-Cheese - $.35
Supper – Pizza - $15.50

Bread - $1.00
Sauce - $2.50
Meat - $4.00
Cheese - $4.00
Veggies - $1.00
Dessert - $2.00
Saturday - $3.15

Lunch –Hotdogs - $2.25

Hotdogs - $2.00
Bread - $.25
Supper – Fried Rice - $.90

Leftover Rice
Leftover pork
Veggies - $.90

As you can see anytime I used reserved meat for a future meal or used rice that was left from another meal, I didn't add it to the cost of the day, because it was already figured into the cost.  So if say, you are making fried rice, your actual cost would be much different than mine above because I had made a roast at the beginning of the week.

Got any good ideas about making a menu plan and sticking to a budget???  We would all love to know and have some more great ideas.
